The Politechnika Wroclawska or Wroclaw University of Technology ( WRUT ) consists of 12 Faculties providing education for 30000 students, which makes it the second largest technical university in Poland. Currently, there are about 2 thousand academic employees and 1 thousand PhD students involved in teaching and research conducted at WRUT , which covers most engineering and scientific fields. The Fibre-Optic Group representing WRUT in PHOSFOS belongs to the Institute of Physics and consists of 1 professor, 4 researchers, and 2 PhD students. The scientific activity of the group is focused on modelling of specialty fibres, photonic crystal fibres, and fibre based devises using advanced numerical methods. The group has also expertise in characterization of conventional and photonic crystal fibres, which includes measurements of birefringence, PMD, polarization holding parameter, transmission and bending losses, and sensing parameters. The research interest of the group is also in modelling and characterization of Bragg gratings for sensing applications and in the development of interferometric and polarimetric single-point sensors and mutiplexed sensor systems. The Fiber-Optic Group from WRUT is a member of the EC FP6 Network of Excellence on Micro-Optics (NEMO) and actively participates to the Cost Action P11, Physics of linear, nonlinear and active photonic crystals and the Cost Action 299, Optical Fibres for New Challenges Facing the Information Society.
